LAKE TEKAPO Gateway to Mount Cook National Park
Gateway to Mount Cook/Aoraki National Park. Tekapo is home to the Aoraki Mackenzie international dark sky reserve and is only 1 of 4 such reserves in the world. Lake Tekapo is fed by the southern alp rivers, which are fed by glaciers. After the ice breaks off and grounds into rocks it forms powder as fine as flour, which is called glacier flour. This is what remains suspended in the water, which in turn makes Lake Tekapo that amazing turquoise colour.
Fun Fact: The town has special street lights to prevent light pollution affecting the dark sky reserve.
