TE ANAU - Gateway to Milford Sounds
Te Anau is set on the eastern shores of Lake Te Anau. Lake Te Anau is the second biggest lake behind Lake Taupo, but is the largest lake in the South Island. Te Anau borders Fiordland National Park and is the gateway to famed tramping and amazing scenery. Te Anau is close to Milford Sounds and Doubtful sounds. Te Anau is the base for undertaking the Milford Track and Kepler Track, these are long 4 day tramping trips. The the endangered Takahe, is a beautiful blue and green bird, which can be heard while walking in the area.
Fun Fact: Manapouri has the largest underground hydroelectric power station in New Zealand.
